New Versus Used Moving Boxes

Are you debating between buying new moving boxes or just finding random boxes for free?  Take it from someone who’s moved 4 times in the last 4 years, when it comes to boxes, you get what you pay for.  I understand the hesitation in investing in quality boxes.  Nobody loves a good deal more than me.  I’ll admit it. I am Polish. If I were to write a biography, it would sound something like this: I am a frugal Polish cat-loving lady from Illinois.

After meeting my fiancé, I learned there are some things you just can’t skimp on.   Sometimes, your time is more valuable than the effort a DIY project takes.  Sometimes cheapest causes more problems and headaches than the better, maybe-not-even-that-much-more-expensive option.

Yes, I am aware that you can get free boxes at places and you can store them for months in advanced of a move.  However, for some of us, that is simply not on option for space or sanity purposes, let alone the reasons I will go into next.

Here are a few important reasons why you should research the type of box you’re getting for both moving and storing items.  Any Amazing Spaces store location can help you find the right boxes for your needs.

  1. New boxes are easier to pack and seal

This in itself can be a life-saver. You don’t have to wrap tape around a crumbling, grocery-store-smelling, box.  Rather, you can store your items in a clean and sturdy place.

  1. New boxes are easier to stack

If you get a variety of sized boxes, you will not be able to pack the moving truck or storage unit in the most effective way.  Having a variety of size and shaped boxes can lead to dangerous moving conditions. Keep yourself and your items safe with uniformed boxes.

  1. New boxes can be completely sealed and labeled to your specific needs

This is especially handy when you’re storing items for a longer period of time

  1. New boxes are sturdier than old boxes

New boxes haven’t been worn away and can protect your items more effectively.  Look for double walled boxes – those will be your best bets for keeping everything in a box instead of falling through the bottom, onto the floor.

  1. There are a variety of specialty boxes available to help you move certain items more effectively

Certain types of boxes, like Wardrobe, Dish Packs, and Mirror Boxes are extremely difficult to find used or free.  These boxes were created with a specific purpose in mind: get your items moved safely and easily.  There are a variety of specialty boxes available on the market today. Contact one of our moving box retail centers for all of our options.

  1. New boxes make your move more efficient

Movers can work faster with uniform boxes.  Save time and money by buying new boxes, labeling them with smart tape, and getting items ready before the movers come.

Ask anyone who’s moved multiple times.  Pack it right the first time.

This past week I helped a family move all of their stuff. They had a ton of really old moving boxes. Everything was just falling through them. it would have made such a difference if they would have had new boxes to use.

One of the things that my wife have been really passionate about is double walled boxes, like you advise here. Last time we moved we had an incident where a lot of the single walled boxes had their contents fall through the bottom! This is a mistake that we will not repeat, and I hope no one else experiences it either. Thanks for the other tips and advice too!

I like that you list the pros of getting new boxes for moving. It really is more sanitary, but it also is easier to shut and move newer boxes. They haven’t been squished or taped and un-taped a bunch of times. It’s just a better option.

I like how you said, “Sometimes, your time is more valuable than the effort a DIY project takes”. I find that to be so true. For example, if you get old boxes, first you have to find out where they are, and pick them up. While you’re moving, you have to worry about them not ripping. When you get new boxes for your move, you don’t need to worry about that. You could actually save time by purchasing new boxes, giving you more time to focus on what really matters.
